Apples are fall favorites and there are so many ways to prepare them. Do not put the grill away for the year because it is perfect for cooking apples of all kinds. This recipe for old-fashioned apple crisp owes its delicious results to the grill. Serve it with ice cream or whipped cream for the perfect added touch. This recipe yields six servings and takes just 20 minutes to prepare.
• 10 cups (approximately 8 medium) tart apples, peeled and sliced thinly
• 1 cup packed brown sugar
• 1 cup old-fashioned oats
• 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
• ¼ cup all-purpose flour
• ¼ cup butter, cold and cubed
• 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
• Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (optional)
Step 1: Tear off two sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil measuring approximately 24 inches x 12 inches. Place one sheet on top of the other, doubling the thickness. Put the apple slices on top of the top layer of foil.
Step 2: Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, flour, oats, cloves, and nutmeg in a small bowl. Cut in the butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Sprinkle this mixture over the apple slices.
Step 3: Fold the foil around the topped apple slices and create a tight seal. Place the packet on the grill rack and grill on medium heat until the apples are tender, approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
Step 4: Remove the packet from the grill and open it carefully, allowing the steam to escape. Divide into serving dishes and top with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired. Serve warm.
