Grilling Up Some Delicious Valentine’s Day Desserts

smoresValentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to consume more than our fair share of treats. It is also an excuse to dust off the grill. Use these recipes to prepare a smorgasbord of sweets that will make any valentine fall in love. Just be careful not to eat too many or the aftermath of February 14 will include a tummy ache.

Ingredients for a Pot of S’mores:

  • 1 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 2 cups (12 ounces) of semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup of butterscotch chips
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 14.5-ounce package whole graham crackers, crushed

Step 1: Prepare the grill for low heat. Use heavy-duty aluminum foil to line a Dutch oven.

Step 2: Combine the butter and crushed graham crackers and press the mixture into the bottom of the Dutch oven. Pour the condensed milk over this crust.

Step 3: Sprinkle the butterscotch and chocolate chips onto the crust and top with marshmallows.

Step 4: Cover the Dutch oven and place it on top of some of the charcoal briquettes. Grab some of the remaining briquettes with long-handled tongs and place these on the cover of the Dutch oven.

Step 5: Grill until the chips are melted, approximately 15 minutes. Lift the Dutch oven cover with the tongs to check for doneness.

Ingredients for Red-Hot Grilled Apples:

  • 4 medium tart apples, cored
  • ¼ cup hot cinnamon candies
  • 4 teaspoons brown sugar
  • Vanilla frozen yogurt, ice cream, or whipped cream

Step 1: Double heavy-duty aluminum foil to form a 12-inch square. Place the apples on the foil. Spoon one tablespoon of cinnamon candies and one teaspoon of sugar into the cored center of each apple. Fold the foil around the apples to tightly seal them.

Step 2: Grill the apples on medium heat until they are tender, approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Carefully open the foil, letting the steam escape without burning yourself.

Step 3: Transfer the apples to serving dishes carefully. Serve with frozen yogurt, ice cream, or whipped cream.

Ingredients for Honey-Rum Bananas:

  • 4 firm, unpeeled medium bananas
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons rum
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt

Step 1: Combine the honey, cinnamon, and rum in a small bowl and set this aside.

Step 2: Heat the grill to medium temperature. Halve the bananas lengthwise without removing the peel. Place the banana pieces on the grill grate with the cut side facing down. Grill for three minutes, turn, brush with the honey mixture, and grill until tender, approximately 5 to 6 minutes.

Step 3: Peel the bananas and serve them immediately with the ice cream or frozen yogurt.
